Biography
I studied philosophy and theology at Keble College, Oxford and undertook postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Divinity, Cambridge and the Evangelisches Stift in Tübingen. Here my interests in philosophical theology and the importance of culture within theological reflection led me to focus upon the philosophy and theology of the German-American Lutheran Paul Tillich. My Ph.D. (supervised by Douglas Hedley) considered the theological and philosophical background to Tillich's early proposals for the reformulation of theology as theology of culture, with particular reference to the role of art within this project. Since finishing my doctoral studies, I worked in various roles in Cambridge: as a Research Associate in the Psychology and Religion Research Group, a Lecturer in the Philosophy of Religion at the Faculty of Divinity and a Fellow of St. Edmund’s College.
I am currently Lord Gifford Fellow in the School of Divinity, History and Philosophy at the Unviersity of Aberdeen, co-convenor of The Boyle Lectures, co-chair of the American Academy of Religion Group, Paul Tillich: Issues in Theology, Religion, and Culture, and President of the North American Paul Tillich Society.
I am married to Francesca, bloggeuse extraordinaire: http://asaucepanandasuitcase.blogspot.com/

The Order Project
God's Order, Man's Order and the Order of Nature
Ever since the Scientific Revolution, natural philosophy and Christian natural theology have united to place man in a well-ordered universe, and with powerful argument. This image even survived quantum indeterminacy and chaos theory.
In the last decade, this 400-year old image has been powerfully challenged. Increasingly the traditional view of an ordered nature is being put into question by highly detailed (and naturally controversial) studies in the history, philosophy and sociology of science.
If this venerable view of nature breaks down, what effect does that have on our understanding of God and His relation to nature and to ourselves?
For the first time, this project will investigate the theological implications of the new images of nature. It will explore groundbreaking ideas about the order of nature as pictured through modern science and bring them to bear on well-established views of God, nature and man.
The 'Order' Project is a four year joint project between the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science (CPNSS) at the London School of Economics (LSE) and the Philosophy Department at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD).
The project is supported by a grant from the Templeton Foundation.
