Biography
I studied philosophy and theology at Keble College, Oxford and did my postgraduate studies at the Faculty of Divinity, Cambridge. Here my interests in philosophical theology and the importance of culture within theological reflection led me to focus upon the philosophy and theology of the German-American Lutheran Paul Tillich. My Ph.D. (supervised by Douglas Hedley) considered the theological and philosophical background to Tillich's early proposals for the reformulation of theology as theology of culture, with particular reference to the role of art within this project. As part of my research, I spent a Semester at the Evangelisches Stift in Tübingen. Since finishing my doctoral studies, I have worked in various roles in Cambridge: as a Research Associate in the Psychology and Religion Research Group, a Lecturer in the Philosophy of Religion at the Faculty of Divinity and a Fellow of St. Edmund’s College.
I am currently Lord Gifford Fellow in the School of Divinity, History and Philosophy at the Unviersity of Aberdeen, co-convenor of The Boyle Lectures, co-chair of the American Academy of Religion Group, Paul Tillich: Issues in Theology, Religion, and Culture, and President of the North American Paul Tillich Society.
I am married to Francesca, bloggeuse extraordinaire: http://asaucepanandasuitcase.blogspot.com/
