Biography

I was born in Milan in 1965. After obtaining my degree in mathematics from ETH Zurich and my doctorate in philosophy from the University of Cambridge, I was Research Fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge, and at Balliol College, Oxford. I was Junior Lecturer at Oxford University, Assistant Professor at the University of California at Berkeley, Humboldt Fellow at the University and the IGPP of Freiburg, CNRS Researcher at the IHPST in Paris, and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Time of the University of Sydney before coming to Aberdeen first as Senior Lecturer, then (since August 2011) Reader in Philosophy.

Research Interests

My main field of research is the philosophy of physics, in particular the philosophy of quantum theory. I also work on the history of quantum theory and have published a book on the 1927 Solvay conference (together with A. Valentini). My Ph.D. was on the so-called modal interpretation of quantum theory, but I have been working since on a variety of other approaches. I am also interested in the foundations of probability and in issues of time symmetry and asymmetry.

Current Research

My largest research project at present is a new book, together with my postdoc Elise Crull, with the provisional title 'The Einstein Paradox': The debate on nonlocality and incompleteness in 1935. As with my earlier book on the fifth Solvay conference, this project lies between history of quantum mechanics and philosophy of quantum mechanics. Further current work includes projects on non-equilibrium in Nelson's stochastic mechanics, decoherence and its relation to time symmetry, probabilities in quantum theory, and the figure and work of Grete Hermann.
