Research Interests

In the context of my employment at the University of Aberdeen, my key research interest is the development of Danish society from the eleventh to the fourteenth century. My research in this field is particularly concerned with the development of Danish law as it has been transmitted through the law-books that were issued from c.1170 to c.1247. An important overarching theme is the question of understanding and defining the nature of Danish society during the centuries in question through comparison with contemporary societies in western and central Europe. This theme seems particularly promising at present, as traditional models of European “feudal” society are giving way to models inspired by anthropological and ethnological research.

In addition to these studies, I am also engaged in research on the effects of the Black Death upon fourteenth-century society, largely based upon personal studies in account rolls and other sources from Maurienne, Savoy.
