The Sawyer Seminar: Citizens within Subjects
In 2003 the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation awarded $107,000 to the Centre for Early Modern Studies at the University of Aberdeen in support of a Sawyer Seminar on Citizens within Subjects: Political Rights and Participation in Historical and Contemporary Perspective. This marks the first time that the Foundation has extended participation in the presitigious Sawyer Seminar series, which has historically been open only to America’s leading research universities. In 2003-4 the Seminar was launched with four one-day conferences, a series of fortnightly workshops, and three research fellowships, all devoted to addressing contemporary political issues from an early modern perspective. Following upon the success of the events in the first year, The Mellon Foundation extended funding to a further programme of events, the first of which was held on 15-16th April 2005 entitled ‘Urban vs National Citizenship’
