Representation of the Warrior in relation to the King in the European Middle Ages, 600-1200

The aim of the project, led by Professor Jan Erik Rekdal of the University of Oslo, is to use comparative and interdisciplinary approaches to the textual culture of the early, central and late Middle Ages in order to understand how the role of the warrior was understood, and how perceptions and representations of that role changed across time, between cultures, and between different textual genres. The project team includes specialists in mediaeval Welsh, Scandinavian, Irish and English literature and history, and takes place at Norway's most prestigious research institution, the Centre for Advanced Study at the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters in Oslo, which funds three big projects each year. A co-authored book will be produced, provisionally entitled Warriors and Kings.
