The Celtic Department was established in 1916, following a prolonged period of campaigning both within and outside of the University. Appropriately, given our location here in the North of Scotland, the Department has always specialised in the Gaelic of Scotland. Our current name recognises this specialism, while also celebrating the link with the Department’s long and prestigious history.
There are presently six members of academic staff in Celtic and Gaelic, including four dedicated full-time lecturers. The Department is part of the School of Language and Literature, and is located in Taylor Building, between High Street, Dunbar Street and Regent Walk in the scenic Old Aberdeen campus.
The Department publishes the journal Scottish Gaelic Studies, which is a leading peer-reviewed journal in the discipline, and we co-lead the inter-university Soillse research project, which aims to develop research capacity to inform public policy towards the maintenance and revitalisation of Gaelic language and culture.
