Research in the College of Arts and Social Sciences

Within the next ten years our College will be recognised as an internationally known, research-led centre for the Arts and Social Sciences with a reputation that attracts and retains the highest quality staff and postgraduate students.  The College already has a number of flourishing research groups, including the internationally renowned AHRC Centre for Irish and Scottish Studies (one of only two in the UK to receive Phase 2 funding in AHRC Research Centres Scheme), the Centre for European Labour Market Research, the Centre for Early Modern Studies and the Elphinstone Institute for the study of human traditions.

It has also recently established The Centre for Modern Thought, a site for cross-disciplinary theoretical research bearing on global socio-historical developments and political issues. Its aim is to carry forward the initiatives and thinking that have transformed the humanities and the social sciences over the past four decades.

Our aim is to foster further opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration by encouraging interaction with research centres and institutes throughout the University and with other national international Institutions.

Information for postgraduate research students on programmes, scholarships, bursaries and how to apply for a place can be found on our Graduate School website.
