Professor Alison Lumsden - Director of Learning and Teaching

Professor Alison Lumsden

Professor Lumsden, who works predominantly on Walter Scott, is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen and the University of Edinburgh. She was awarded a personal chair in English Literature in 2012 and was appointed Director of Teaching and Learning in September 2012.

The Director of Learning and Teaching oversees the accomplishment of the College’s strategic aims and ambitions with regard to learning and teaching at undergraduate level, including but not limited to academic mentoring, articulation, recruitment and retention, student experience, teaching quality and best practice, and widening participation.

Professor William Naphy - Director of Graduate School

Professor Bill Naphy

Professor Naphy, an historian, is a graduate of the College of William & Mary and the University of St Andrews. He was awarded a personal chair at the University of Aberdeen in 2007 and was appointed Director of the Graduate School in August 2008. 

The Director of the Graduate School is responsible for the strategic direction and development of postgraduate affairs in the College, including but not limited to issues regarding doctoral completion and submission rates, monitoring and progression of research students, postgraduate funding strategy, research skills and training, student experience, and student recruitment.

Professor Joachim Schaper - Director of Research

Professor Joachim Schaper

Professor Schaper, a theologian, is a graduate of the University of Tübingen and the University of Cambridge. He was awarded a personal chair at the University of Aberdeen in 2006 and was appointed Director of Research in November 2011.

The Director of Research is the academic lead for the research ambitions of the College, in areas including but not limited to the external research funding portfolio, knowledge exchange and commercialisation, principal investigator training and development, research ethics, research impact, and the Research Excellence Framework (REF).
