Monitoring Forms
From October 2009 a new monitoring procedure, designed to ensure timely completion, has been instigated. The goal is to encourage and enable submission not later than 36 to 42 months, with the viva completed and thesis passed not later than 42 to 48 months.
All the monitoring forms are downloadable here.
Pre-arrival: Additional Resources Assessment Form
This form should be filled out at the point of accepting a student's application. It should identify any need for additional materials, equipment and extensive periods of research outside Aberdeen, and should give a rough estimate of any costs additional to fees and maintenance which might be imposed on the student. It should also ensure that there is a realistic assessment of the ability of the project as outlined to be completed in 36 months.
Months 1 - 3: Skills' Audit and Monitoring Form
This form should be completed within the first three months of the student's arrival, and will identify both subject-specific (e.g., a foreign language) and generic (e.g., database training, preparation for tutoring) which the student should undertake in the first year.
Month 6: Routine Monitoring Form
This form serves to update information on the student's progress and note the student's acquisition of the skills noted in the initial audit. This would also be the time to note any additional skills needed as well as any changes to the initial resources audit.
Months 9 - 12: Year 1 and 2 Progression Form
This form should be completed by the student and the supervisory team, and be submitted to the Progression Committee alongside the student's assessible piece of work.
Month 18: Routine Monitoring Form
This form serves to update information on the student's progress and note the student's acquisition of the skills noted in the previous two audits. This would also be the time to note any additional skills needed as well as any changes to the previous audits.
Months 21 - 24: Year 1 and 2 Progression Form
This form should be completed by the student and the supervisory team, and be submitted to the Progression Committee alongside the student's assessible piece of work.
Month 30: Routine Monitoring Form
This form serves to update information on the student's progress and note the student's acquisition of the skills noted in the previous progression reports, as well as noting any additional skills needed. It will also be essential to identify any reasons why submission might not occur within the supervised period.
Months 33 - 36: Year 3 Assessment Form
This form should be submitted to the Progression Committee if the student requires an extension of up to six months at the end of their three-year period of study.
Extensions: Year 3 Extension Form
This form should be submitted to the Extension Panel if it is clear at the end of three years that the student is not likely to submit within the next six months but is deemed by the Progression Committee to be capable of submitting within 12 months.
