Short writing course for PhD students in Arts subjects

Reading and Writing Critically is a new course offered by the Student Learning Service.

This 4-part course will address argumentation, writing style, theoretical framework and use of sources in both others' writing, and one's own writing. With a maximum of 8 participants and 2 tutors, we will work in small groups to look at academic writing, including articles relevant to the participants' research. We will then look at participants' writing, again with an eye to improving argumentation, style and articulation of one's theoretical framework. The aim of the course is to give students more awareness of these aspects of academic writing, and to build their confidence in both their reading and writing skills.

The course is offered only to PhD students in Arts subjects. It is not suitable for those in Social Sciences disciplines. Participants will need to have begun writing, and be prepared to share a draft chapter.

Tutors: Dr. Christine Laennec & Dr. Mary Pryor, Senior Academic Skills Advisors, Student Learning Service
