AHRC Studentships
Applicants should note that all institutions holding Block Grant Partnerships (BGP) with the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) have been informed that the current fiscal crisis and changes in state funding may mean that funding cannot be guaranteed for awards to start Oct 2011. Current awards are NOT affected. We are unsure at present whether this will mean a decrease in the value of awards or a cut in the number of awards to be offered. Despite this uncertainty we are keen to recruit high quality students to the awards which we currently hold under the BGP with the AHRC.
From 2009, the way that the AHRC provides funding to Universities is changing.
Funding will be awarded in the form of a Block Grant Partnership (BGP). The University applied for a BGP in September 2008 and is pleased to announce it has been successful in attaining a BGP thus enabling us to offer postgraduate studentships to five successive cohorts of Masters and PhD students, from 2009-2010 to 2013-2014. The number and nature of the studentships that we will be allowed to offer will change each year.
AHRC studentships are fully-funded, i.e. they cover payment of full home fees and a maintenance stipend. They are principally available to UK nationals who have been normally resident in the UK for the three years prior to their nomination for funding. If a student is a national of a Member State of the European Union other than the UK, they are eligible for a full studentship award if they can establish a relevant connection with the UK and Islands, i.e. if they have been ordinarily resident in the UK throughout the three year period immediately preceding the start of their course. EU students who cannot establish a relevant connection with the UK and Islands may be eligible for a fees-only award. Full details regarding eligibility are set out in the AHRC's Guide to Student Eligibility.
More information about the AHRC and the Block Grant Partnership awards is available from the AHRC's website.
How to Apply
Students wishing to be considered for an AHRC studentship must first apply to the University for a place of study, using the standard postgraduate application form available online through the Admissions website. Under 'Intended Source of Funding', please select 'Research Council - AHRC'. The deadline for submitting this application, including all supporting documentation (references, transcripts, research proposal, etc.) is Friday 6 April 2012. The University cannot guarantee that incomplete applications will be considered for an AHRC award, although they will still be considered for a place of study.
