Improving English

Learning English from books and the media does not always prepare you for using English on a day to day basis.  Indeed, at the University of Aberdeen you will hear a variety of accents. These accents may be difficult to understand at first but as with any skill, the more you do it; the more you improve.  Listening to lectures, participating in class and completing writing assignments in English may also be challenging.  The University Language Centre offers opportunities to develop the language skills and the cultural orientation you need to be successful in your academic work.

Language Centre

Before the term (pre-sessional)
The Language Centre offers academic reading, speaking, listening and writing skills language courses in the weeks before the term begins designed especially for postgraduates, including courses for Business and Law postgraduates. See the side panel on this website for detailed information about the courses.

During the term (in-sessional)
During each term the Language Centre offers a series of 6 week academic language courses focusing on improving writing, improving pronunciation, giving presentations, and building confidence for participating in seminars. Click here for more information.
