Academic Performance and Grades / Marks

Students coming from different backgrounds often have questions about what makes for good work at the University of Aberdeen. The answer to this question, of course, depends on the course and the requirements of the instructor. There are, however, a few patterns which tend to apply across the programmes.

While students are expected to learn from their lectures and the readings, they are usually also expected to think critically about this information: to analyse it; to evaluate it and to apply it to real life situations. Generally your assignments will be assessed on those abilities. In most classes, lectures will not be the only learning mode and written exams and papers may not be the only forms of assessment. You are also likely to be asked to demonstrate your critical thinking skills in presentations, seminars or group projects. Your performance in these assignments will also contribute to your grade.

Grading Scale

Most assignments will be assessed using the 20 point CAS Scale.  More information on the scale is at: http://www.abdn.ac.uk/registry/quality/appendix7x3.pdf.  However, what constitutes a particular score in any of the bands will depend on the specific criteria for marking each assignment and the criteria for the overall mark.

Your programme co-ordinator, course co-ordinator or supervisor are best placed to explain in detail the marking/grading scale being used and what is expected of you.

For a comprehensive guide to the rules and procedures on attendance, assessment and performance which will govern your studies at the University of Aberdeen, see http://www.abdn.ac.uk/registry/sapa/sapa08.pdf.
