Graduate School Events

As well as the induction events in October and February, the Graduate School runs two annual events.

PhD Away Day

This popular event for students in the first year of their PhD takes place in early December each year. It is mandatory for all AHRC, RPAS and Open Award holders, and is open to any other first year PhD students.

The day includes talks by members of staff on topics relevant to new PhD students, discussion groups, and opportunities for students to ask questions on anything relating to their studies. Here are some comments from attendees on previous Away Days:

"I half expected it to be boring but it was very insightful. A lot of questions were discussed and the relevant experience of the speakers were invaluable … it would've been nice to also get the experience of someone who moved from PhD to the professional world." - [The Graduate School will try to arrange this for next year – excellent suggestion!]

"The workshop was brilliant … I really appreciate the fact that each speaker was punctual. And it's really impressive to see that they were able to say so much in such a limited time."

"Thank you for this day, it was both informative and enjoyable."

"I found it was a very nice session which gave me lots of good tips and even could change my ways of coping with things for my study."

"Thanks a million for the PhD away day. For me it was a very fruitful day. The part on writing a literature review and completing your PhD on time were particularly very useful. They both helped to enrich my readings and help restructure the pace at which I will continue my work."

Burns Night Ceilidh

Danse McCabreThis usually takes place in early February, and is open to all postgraduate students in the College and their guests. Tickets are sold through the College Office, the Graduate Business School and the School of Law, and cover entry to the ceilidh, a hot buffet and a free drink from the bar.

Music is provided by local ceilidh band Danse McCabre, and all dances are fully called, so anyone from first-timers to pros can take part. This is a good fun way to enjoy some traditional Scottish culture, keep warm and chase away the winter blues!

You can see some more photos from the 2010 ceilidh, including the glorious sight of Professor Naphy in full Highland dress, here.
