The University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495, is the 3rd oldest in Scotland, the 5th oldest in the UK and the 37th oldest in Europe, having been founded between the University of Copenhagen (1479) and the Complutense University of Madrid (1499).
The College of Arts and Social Sciences Graduate School provides resources for students that ensure:
- Added value to first degrees through advanced knowledge and understanding.
- Further development of (or preparation for) a professional career, including an academic research career.
- Enhancement of personal development skills that encourage creativity, motivation, originality and flair.

In 2009-10, the College awarded more than 2,000,000 pounds in funding from various sources to more than 100 students.
All postgraduate students who have been offered a place (conditional or unconditional) to study at the University in 2010-11 will automatically be considered for any funding for which they are eligible.
