The College of Arts and Social Sciences is based at the picturesque King’s College Campus, the site where the University was originally established in 1495. The College comprises the Schools of Business, Divinity, History & Philosophy, Education, Language & Literature, Law, and Social Science, and aims to achieve international recognition as a research-led centre of teaching excellence for the Arts and Social Sciences. It includes over half of the University’s student population with around 9,000 undergraduate and 3,000 postgraduate students.
The MA can be taken as an Honours (four year) or a Designated (three year), degree. Honours students can specialise in one particular subject (Single Honours), in two (Joint Honours), or in the case of Historical Studies and Scottish Studies, three (General Honours). You can also take an Honours degree in which you add a ‘minor’ in a subject to your ‘major’ subject. The choice is yours!
On a degree course in an arts and social science subject, you have a great deal of freedom to devise your own programme of study, and there is a very wide choice of subjects. Under Curriculum Reform, single Honours students will broaden their knowledge base by taking Enhanced Study courses – you can choose to learn a language, take a course in business skills, or study one of our multi-disciplinary Sixth Century Courses. Joint Honours students can also take courses from outside their chosen disciplines in first and second year.
Your studies - whatever the subject - are only part of the story. Employers are looking for intelligence and energy, research, retrieval and presentation skills, adaptability and the ability to learn quickly, good time management, IT competence and the ability to take responsibility and work reliably without supervision. Our degree programmes will help you develop all these skills and qualities, setting you up for success in your chosen career or future study.
In addition to the MA, the College of Arts and Social Sciences offers undergraduate degrees in Law, Divinity/Theology, Education and Music.
