International Citizen Service: global volunteering programme for 18-25 year olds

ICS offers you the chance to use the knowledge and skills from your course to help fight global poverty, whilst also developing valuable skills for employment.

ICS is the UK’s leading global volunteering programme that supports young people from all backgrounds to make a real difference to global poverty. Funded by the Department for International Development, we’re building a generation of global citizens.

On a 12-week placement, you’ll work with young people on exciting and valuable programmes. You could be:

  • Part of a business enterprise programme, supporting young people to develop the skills needed to run their own business.
  • Running dance4life workshops, which involve using dance and music to raise awareness of HIV and AIDS.
  • Running fun and interactive careers fairs for young people.
  • Running computer training sessions for young people who have limited access to IT equipment.

When you return to the UK, you’ll be involved in exciting social action projects to raise awareness of the issues you encountered on placement overseas.

ICS volunteers work alongside local volunteers in: India, Nepal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

ICS is open to 18-25 year olds, with limited places available for Leaders aged 23+.

You do not need particular skills or qualifications. They are looking for a diverse range of young people with commitment, enthusiasm and an interest in our work.

Most volunteers are asked to raise £800 to take part in ICS. You’ll be given one-to-one support by professional fundraisers. Importantly, no one will be excluded for financial reasons.
