Making the Most of Masters

Work-based projects for Masters students is part of the Scottish Funding Council's (SFC) Learning to Work 2 initiative at the University of Aberdeen, and is branded as 'Making the Most of Masters'.

The University of Aberdeen, in collaboration with the Universities of Edinburgh and Stirling is running a programme aimed at building and strengthening links between universities and employers.  We are actively looking to bring together employers of any size, and Masters students from a range of programmes across the University to undertake collaborative projects (usually 3 months in length running from May/June) of mutual benefit.

As an employer:

  • Do you have research or project proposals but lack the expertise, staff time and/or access to resources to deliver them?
  • Do you have data in need of analysis or interpretation, or simply have some good ideas that need investigating?
  • Would you be willing to support a Masters student with their project on a salary free basis?

The benefits to employers include:

  • Access to expertise - undertake research projects with access to the resources, equipment and excellence of the University of Aberdeen
  • Efficient resourcing - utilise skilled, driven and proactive Masters students from your likely recruitment pool and develop them as a potential future resource
  • Cost effective - the project forms part of their degree assessment, so the students do not require a salary payment (however, some discretionay payments and expenses are not uncommon)
  • Knowledge transfer - new and continued links with academic establishments

What's involved?

There is a degree of flexibility within project development and format, so all aspects can be discussed and tailored on an individual basis. For example, the projects can be laboratory, field or office based, as well as being flexible enough to be based within the host organisation on a full time basis or being primarily based within the University and having reguar project development meetings with you.
