The clinical department is one of the busiest University centres in the UK, being the sole provider of secondary and tertiary level cardiological care to a population of more than 500,000 in Grampian Region and the Northern Isles (Orkney and Shetland). The Cardiology Research Group recruits many patients to a number of multi-centre randomised controlled trials of pharmacological therapy. Currently, patients with a wide spectrum of cardiovascular disease are involved with the following studies: ACTIVE – A parallel randomised controlled evaluation of Clopidogrel plus Aspirin, with factorial evaluation of Ibesartan, for the prevention of vascular events in patients with atrial fibrillation. ARCHIPELAGO - a randomised comparison of a two month regimen of irbesartan versus enalapril on cardiovascular markers in patients with acute coronary syndrome without ST segment elevation ARISE – A randomised double-blind study evaluating the effects of a new anti-inflammatory agent in reduction of progression of atherosclerosis and cardiac events. FAMI – A study of the environmental, inflammatory and genetic causes , and of the gene-environment interactions which cause MI in Italy, China and Scotland. HAT – Home AED Trial: A multi-centre randomised trial, comparing lay use of an AED (automatic external defibrillator), versus lay activation of standard medical emergency services, for sudden cardiac arrest in patients with a history of anterior wall MI. MBG - An open-label study to investigate the prognostic usefulness of I-mIBG imaging to investigate patients with NYHA class II or III Heart Failure who will experience an adverse cardiac event. |
