Qualifications: Phd, MSc, BSc, MRPharmS
Appointments: Senior Research Fellow
Research Interests:
Have undertaken numerous studies in this field over the last 15 years. The main themes are described below:
1. Use and Effectiveness of Treatments: This is the main area of focus in the research programme at present. A large RCT of enhanced pharmacy services for methadone patients started in November 2007 and will report in March 2010, funded by the CSO of the Scottish Executive. The study will test whether training pharmacists in motivational interviewing can affect the outcomes of methadone treatment for those receiving supervised daily methadone from pharmacies. Over 500 patients have been recruited.
Also ongoing is a pilot study of methadone supervision to start to establish evidence of how long patients should consume their methadone under supervision and when they should be able to take their methadone at home. This study is in conjunction with Highland, Glasgow and East Anglia and will report in December 2009.
Other past studies include a feasibility study of buprenorphine dispensing in pharmacies, audits of local treatment services, surveys of the use of Accident and Emergency services for drug and alcohol related problems, systematic review of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of community maintenance, community detoxification and residential rehabilitation etc.
2. Needle Exchange Services - Prevention of Blood Borne Viruses
A qualitative study of long term users of Fraserburgh needle exchange will start in October 2009. This will explore people’s drug use and risk taking behaviour over time and how services have influenced this over time. It is intended to inform NHS Grampian’s blood borne virus strategy.
A novel user preference study was conducted in 2006 in which injecting drug users were asked to suggest then prioritise potential developments in needle exchange service provision (published in Public Health in 2008). Qualitative exploration of why some pharmacies do not provide needle exchange services conducted in 2005-2006. Published in the Int Journal of Pharmacy Practice.
3. The Role of Health Professionals in Drug Misuse Management
Numerous surveys, both national and local, have been conducted with general practitioners, pharmacists and specialist nurses. These have been published in a range of journals.
4. Misuse of Over the Counter Medicines
This is an ongoing area of interest.
Teaching Interests:: Have supported numerous student projects and special study modules in drug misuse at a variety of levels: elective student projects for medical students, BSc dissertations, MSc dissertations and theses. I currently have two PhD students.
