Medical and non-medical academic staff are employed in the department. The majority of the medical staff are part time. In addition to the Mackenzie and the Grampian Health Board Chairs, there are currently 3 Professors, 1 Reader, 3 Senior Lecturers, 2 Lecturers, 13 Clinical Senior Lecturers, and a large number of Research Fellows and Research Assistants supported from grant and contract funds. A further 50 general practitioners provide clinical placements for MBChB students. In addition to general practice itself, staff are drawn from a variety of backgrounds, including computing science, health economics, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, public health, sociology and statistics.

The Centre for Advanced Studies in Nursing is based within the Department.
