Campus Services - Supporting our planet Healthyeating sustainability Supporting our planet

Campus Services is committed to helping the environment and increasing awareness within the University.

Sustainability is a major part of our planning in Campus Services.  As one of the largest departments in the University, we have changed the way we do things in our Halls of Residence, in our Cafes, Restaurants and our shops.  Our approach and commitment to carbon management is key to our service provision for students, staff, visitors and external organisations on a daily basis.

Supporting Fairtrade

Every year, typically during February & March, sees Campus Services run a range of activities during Fair-trade Fortnight such as:

    • free tasters

    • information points

    • trolley dashes

    • Fairtrade shops and cafes

    • Zeste offers up some Fairtrade options

    • turning Fast Grub to Fairtrade Grub

    • offers on all Tiki venues to reveive a free chocolate cookie with all large hot drinks

    • waffle stalls

As a part of a wider commitment to increasing the availability of Fairtrade products on Campus and awareness of Fairtrade within the University, Campus Services supplies Fairtrade coffee, black tea and sugar in all its delivered catering orders and eateries.

Fairtrade Wine and Fruit Juice options are also available for you to select.

Wherever you are on campus, you have the power to impact positively on the lives of people around the globe through just by buying a coffee. Together with our commitment to provide Fairtrade products across all our eateries, we strive, where possible to ensure that any packaging is biodegradable or can be recycled.

Following the success of last year, we continue to recycle the coffee grinds from the staggering 116,700 cups of coffee (in one shape or another) we serve up monthly and give it away to the keen green finger people amongst you.

Smugs – obliterating plastic and paper cups on all campus coffee bars

SMUG

Coffee going cold?

Still in the paper mug? Adopt a SMUG. Our SMUG campaign has, in the last year, reduced the number of disposable cups being used by 11,275 with over 1,500 Smug Mugs being sold across campus.

Abolish the mug.

Sustainability

Sustainability is a major part of our planning in Campus Services.  As one of the largest departments in the University, we have changed the way we do things in our Halls of Residence, in our Cafes, Restaurants and our shops.  Our approach and commitment to carbon management is key to our service provision for students, staff, visitors and external organisations on a daily basis.

Accommodation

On an annual basis, Campus Services accommodates over 3000 new students in our Halls of Residence, who continue to make their carbon footprint distinctive in today’s shrinking world, is a real challenge.

A small change to their everyday behaviour would contribute significantly to a greener Scotland and we are focused on getting that message across to them.

Vending

Our new ‘Vending’ contract has requested the requirement to reduce emissions through reduced running costs, more efficient insulation, reduced materials used in construction, lighter machines using less fuel to transport and improved reliability requiring less site maintenance visits.

Additionally, in Campus Services we have reduced the number of deliveries by consolidating the number of suppliers; for example, we are about to introduce an initiative where by our daily dairy supplier who currently delivers in their own vehicle, will have their milk and produce delivered to us via our Fruit & Veg supplier.  This one example alone reduces the number of vehicle movements to our sites by over 3,750 a year!

Delivered Catering

We are also making efforts to move away from the 9,600 plastic trays used in Delivered Catering annually, to a much more envioronmentally friendly, renewable sourced cardboard box which is 100% recyclable, compostable and biodegradable!

Healthy Living Award

Campus Services are extremely proud to say that we have achieved the Healthy Living accollade within the Hub and are striving to achieve this within our other sites around Campus.

We are committed to making the food we serve to you healthier.

Look out for the apple logo which denotes a healthy living choice using both healthier catering practices & healthier ingredients, making them lower in fat, sugar & salt.
