Why study Real Estate

What is the MA Real Estate?

The MA Real Estate is a four year degree programme which prepares students for a professional career in the real estate sector.  The programme is multidisciplinary, considering the creation and management of Real Estate from the perspectives of economics, finance, law, investment and business. 

The Real Estate department offers both Single and Joint Honours degree programmes all of which are accredited by the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors.  The structure of the degree programme is flexible and it is possible, with appropriate selection of courses, to have a common for year for all of the degree programmes listed below:

  • MA Real Estate (Single Honours)
  • MA Real Estate and Spatial Planning
  • Joint Honours in Real Estate and one of the following: Accountancy, Economics, Finance, Management studies.

Courses included in the MA Real Estate

  • First year required options: Principles of Investment and Finance; Microeconomics; Macroeconomics; Design, Construction and Sustainability.
  • Second year required options:  Land and Real Estate Economics; Principles of Real Estate Valuation; Land Law; Statistics.
    In the second year of the programme, students also have the opportunity of taking part in an exchange programme between Aberdeen and the Department of Real Estate in the National University of Singapore . 
  • Third and Fourth Years (honours) courses include: Applied Valuation; International Real Estate Market Analysis; Real Estate Finance; Housing Economics; Real Estate Portfolio Investment; Real Estate Development and Research methods.  Students are required to complete a dissertation in their final year of study.
    A field trip, usually to London, is a popular and important part of the third year of the MA programme.

This helps to ensure that teaching is research led, covering the most recent methods and topics in the subject area. 

Both staff and students in Real Estate benefit from strong links with the other departments in the University of Aberdeen Business school (Economics, Accountancy, Finance and Management) as well as strong external links with Real Estate practitioners and professionals.

Career opportunities for Real Estate graduates

Graduates tend to seek careers in Real Estate firms, Real Estate departments of financial institutions, development companies, specialist research companies or government organisations. The programme benefits from close links with major employers including CB Richard Ellis, Savills, AtisReal, Strutt and Parker, DTZ, Cushman and Wakefield, DM Hall, Knight Frank, the Investments Real Estate Databank and the Valuation Office Agency
