MBA Biotechnology
The MBA Biotechnology is jointly delivered by the Business School, the School of Medical Sciences and the School of Medicine & Dentistry. It exploits these Schools expertise to offer a unique course in an increasingly important sector of the economy, specifically drug discovery and development. Notably, the course focuses on the 'business of science' rather than the 'bench' nature of science which is catered for elsewhere in the University. In doing so, the programme seeks to develop managers with an understanding of the broad principles of management (through the core study courses including Managing People at Work, Accountancy and Finance, Operations Management, Strategic Marketing, and Leadership & Decision Making). An intensive summer school follows these core courses, including focussed study surrounding specific issues in Biotechnology: Creating and Managing Intellectual Property; Bio-business Investment and Financial Strategies; and The Bio-business Model .
This programme is of 18 month duration, and includes a week long Industrial Study Visit, as well as a five month company-based internship. The fee for 2009/10 entry is expected to be £18,000.
The entry requirements for this programme are higher than others within the Business School, and we would expect a UK First Class Honours degree or equivalent, and relevant work experience. An interview (conducted by telephone/skype if required) will also take place. Numbers on this programme will be capped at a maximum of 5 in the first year.
MBA Finance
The MBA Finance will follow the first two semesters of core courses, already established within our existing MBA programmes and providing a solid grounding in management principles. This will be followed by an intensive summer school, undertaking courses aimed at:
- Providing an understanding of accounting information and financial reporting.
- Giving a background to modern finance.
- Introducing key areas of finance (commodities, currencies, options, hedging, futures, institutions and markets) and to so in an historical context
- Helping the student learn from history and to place finance in that context. To provide the students with theoretical and practical knowledge of quantitative techniques in finance.
- To introduce key areas in quantitative techniques in finance such as regression analysis, correlations, volatility measuring, and time series analysis.
- To help students learn about the usefulness of quantitative analysis in measuring and assessing risk and expected return.
- To introduce key aspects of financial analysis and enable students to undertake interpretation of accounts; ratio analysis and user-group specific tools, e.g. Z scores and credit ratings; accounting information and the stockmarket; forecasting and valuation.
MBA Islamic Banking & Finance
The MBA Islamic Banking & Finance will follow the first two semesters of core courses, already established within our existing MBA programmes. You will then specialise in areas of Islamic Finance by following an intensive summer school, undertaking the modules: Principles of Islamic Finance; Different models of Islamic Banking; and Business in the Islamic World. The courses are aimed at helping to equip students for a career which involves working within an environment of Islamic finance and banking, including:
- Providing an introduction to the main principles of Islamic economics, in particular the theory and practice of Islamic finance and banking
- To briefly relate the concepts of Islamic economics to the recent history of financial institutions within an international context.
- To provide an introduction to the different models of Islamic banking and shari’ah compliant financial services
- To provide a contextual perspective on Islamic banking within the historical creation and development of dedicated Islamic banks and financial services in the past 50 years
- To introduce to students the issues and challenges of business within the context of Muslim countries
- To provide an overview of cross cultural challenges of conducting business between Muslim and non-Muslim organisations
- To explore the economic issues of risk, speculation and capital within specifically Islamic religious perspectives
The Islamic Banking & Finance content is delivered in conjunction with the Al-Maktoum Institute (Dundee).
