Part-Time and Distance Learning Opportunities in Biology

Access to Degree Studies and Summer School for Access

These programmes offer a bridge to degree-level study for prospective students who have no formal qualifications. They are intended as an introduction to the teaching methods used within first year degree courses, and provide the opportunity for development and demonstration of the individual's capability and potential for successful study at first year degree level. Throughout, the aim is to develop both study skills and the knowledge base appropriate to particular subjects.

The Summer School for Access is a ten week, full-time intensive course taken during the summer.

Access to Degree Studies can be taken over one or two years, with video and audio conference classes offered in either late afternoon or evening direct to study centres around Scotland.

Students who successful complete either the Access Programme or Summer School for Access are guaranteed a place at The University of Aberdeen, or they can continue with distance study with the Flexible Science Programme.

Flexible Science Programme

The Flexible Science Programme converts our current on-campus undergraduate science courses into online courses. They have all been specially packaged to preserve their essential features whilst making them available to a wider audience.

Students are not limited to the online material, but are welcome, whenever they are able, to join our on-campus students in lectures, tutorials or practicals, making this an idea study solution for those working in the offshore industry.

Students are allowed to accumulate credits by building up passes in a number of courses and to qualify for the award of a Certificate or Diploma in Science. Successful completion of these awards can allow direct admission to year 2 or 3 of the full- or part-time curriculum in appropriate disciplines.

Part-time Study for Degrees

Anyone who is free to attend the standard day-time degree classes provided for full-time undergraduates, or who can negotiate appropriate flexi-time arrangements with their employer, can proceed as part-time students in all the degree programmes offered by the University of Aberdeen, with the exception of Medicine. Find out more about our Part-time Study for Degrees.

Individual Subject Study

Study in a single subject area without commitment to a full degree programme is possible. Students are registered as a full member of any classes, and passes obtained on this basis can later be counted towards a degree. The entry requirements for this are flexible. Find out more about our Individual Subject Study.

Open Lecture Programme

The University offers members of the general public the opportunity to attend specified courses of lectures in a range of subjects, including Chemistry. Participants are not eligible to attend tutorials or practicals, to submit written work for assessment, nor to enter class or degree examinations. Find out more about out Open Lecture Programme.
