Biography
I graduated with first class honours from the University of Aberdeen in 2007 following which I completed my PhD at the University of Aberdeen. My PhD was on the link between fat and maturation in Atlantic herring. For my research I have spent time sampling at sea on Dutch, Norwegian and UK vessels and have undertaken a lot of laboratory work.
I have been working as a Teaching Fellow since 2010 and as well as spending most of my time teaching I have also kept my interest in my research and have attended conferences and meetings.

Research Interests
I am interested in the link between fat and maturation in commercially exploited fish stocks. I have investigated the early appearance of the circumnuclear ring in Atlantic herring oocytes prior to first maturation and found it to be triggered by photoperiod. I have also investigated the movement of fatty acids between different tissues over the course of a maturational cycle. Further to this I have investigated different measures of body condition in herring, looked at factors affecting long-term variablity in mestenteric fat and have investigated errors in standard maturity staging.

Teaching Responsibilities
Level 1
Course coordinator for SX1003 Oceans and Society and BI1006 Biology for Undergraduates. Both courses are new and are using innovative methods such as group work, interdisciplinary learning and learning in small tutorial groups.
SX1504 The Natural World. Organised trips to the Maritime Museum and Aberdeen Harbour.
Level 2
Course coordinator for BI25Z2 Ocean Biology. I give lectures on many aspects of marine biology from basic oceanography to plankton and nekton. A new field trip and practical have been introducted this year and a big effort has been made to work on the students' essay writing skills.
BI2008 Diversity of Life. Lectures on Anthozoans, Platyhelminthes, Nematodes and Decapods.
BI2505 Conservation Biology. Lectures on conservation issues in marine habitats.
Level 3
Course coordinator for BI3007 Experimental Design, Analysis and Presentation. I give lectures on many aspects of statistical analysis and experimental design.
ZO3508 Marine Ecology and Ecosystems. Lectures on foodwebs and production in polar seas and the North Sea and fisheries.
BI2508 Principals of Animal Physiology. Lectures on reproduction and energy and on animal locomotion.
ZO3305 Animal Population Ecology. Lectures on populations in the real world and population ecology of harvested populations.
Level 4
Course coordinator on BI4505 Conservation in Practice. I give lectures on different aspects of the application of conservation theory to the real world.
Field trips
BI29Z2 Fish and Shellfish Biology (Shetland).
BI39Z1 Sub-tropical Marine and Freshwater Habitats (Florida).
