Research Interests
My main current interest concerns integumental tissue biology. This work focuses on the integument which is the outermost covering of the mammalian body. The tissue is composed of an external epidermis, basement membrane and innermost dermis. Interactions between these tissues result in the production of skin, nails, hoof horn and also hair from follicles embedded in skin. Knowledge on these tissues has implications for the properties of human hair and skin, valuable fibres such as goat cashmere and the health of feet of farm animal species.
I have also interests in the welfare of farm animals particularly dairy cows. These animals frequently develop lesions of feet which give rise to a high incidence of lameness. Much of my current research is centred on the understanding and alleviation of lameness as a major welfare problem in dairy cattle production. This work is now being extended to production issues and cell and molecular biology of foot health in sheep and has implications for sustainability of applied agricultural systems.
I also have interests in factors, including nutrition ( micro- and macro-nutrients) and chemical signalling (hormones, growth factors, receptors, gene expression), which determine the development and composition of body tissue in animals and human beings. The subject includes the use of growth promoters in international animal production. Knowledge of these biological systems has particular relevance to nutritional problems(requirements/obesity/ toxicity) concerning human health and in the context of related sociological and consumer issues.
