Research Interests

The main focus of my current research is the evolution of parasite resistance, in particular, understanding host-parasite interactions at the molecular level. Research on the evolution of host defence mechanisms involves two main model systems. The first model system is the freshwater snail intermediate host and the causative agent of human schistosomiasis, the trematode Schistosoma spp. Current work spans the fields of population genetics, phylogenetics, the identification, and evolution of snail intermediate hosts, through to developing molecular approaches for the isolation and characterization of genes involved in parasite resistance. This research theme has been extended to include investigations of immune gene expression and parasite resistance in 3 fish systems including sealice, (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) and Gyrodactylus salaris resistance in Atlantic salmon and resistance to Tetracapsula bryosalmonae, PKX, causative agent of Proliferative Kidney Disease, PKD in trout.

An additional line of research is the genetics of sharks involving population genetics of globally distributed sharks such as the great white shark, hammerheads and basking sharks, as well as the study of microsatellite evolution in sharks.
