Nitrification | Nitrifier Diversity-Ecosystem Function | Biodiversity-Ecosystem Function
Although archaea are traditionally considered to be extremophiles, non-extremophile members of this kingdom are abundant in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and contribute significantly to ecosystem function. We have characterised non-thermophilic crenarchaea in several soils and demonstrated the influence of land management techniques on their community structure at the Sourhope Experimental Field Station in Scotland. We have also shown marked successional changes in non-thermophilic crenarchaea community structure in a glacial forefield site and are investigating the potential role of non-thermophilic crenarchaea in autotrophic ammonia oxidation.
