Below, you will find a number of download links for the software we recommend. Some of it is free to use, some of it you may need to pay for yourself, some of it is licensed by the university in some way to allow students to use it. See the individual entries for details.

Livescribe Desktop

This software is used with the Livescribe Echo and Pulse pens to view, edit and listen to your captured notes.

Ginger (free edition)

Ginger is an unobtrusive but powerful proofreading tool with a contextual spell/grammar checking engine. You have to be connected to the internet to use it but it's certainly one of the few tools we've seen that are worth using over the standard Microsoft Word built in checker.

Note that the premium version of this software, including text-to-speech function, is available on the University computers.

Text-to-Speech Voices (Stuart and Heather)

These two excelent voices are free for students. You just need to fill in a quick registration form and prove your student status through your email address (your.email@aberdeen.ac.uk).

Just run the downloaded files and follow the prompts. After instalation you should restart any aplication that uses text-to-speech such as ClaroRead, and you'll find the voices available in your programme's options.

ssOverlay is a simply tool that washes your computer display in a colour of your choice and intensity: think of it as an coloured overlay for the computer.

Balabolka is an advanced Text-To-Speech (TTS) program that can be used to create audio versions of computerised text.

Open Dyslexia Font

A font that may help some people with their reading. From their website:

OpenDyslexic is a new open sourced font created to increase readability for readers with dyslexia. The typeface includes regular, bold, italic and bold-italic stylesIt is being updated continually and improved based on input from dyslexic users. There are no restrictions on using OpenDyslexic outside of attribution.
