In Golden Tears – ‘Underneath the Balance’
The new single from In Golden Tears, the follow up from their first single Urban Emotions, combines post-punk and indie in an attempt to create a dramatic sound, but which ultimately left me cold. The chorus is both a blessing and the curse, it is catchy; however, as is the problem with all which possess this quality, it is extremely repetitive and runs the risk of displaying a lack of creativity. However, if it is mainstream success which this band is searching for, and the song has therefore been crafted to this end, then a memorable melody in the chorus is obviously a useful element. This is not to say that it is all pop with this band. The strong eighties, post-punk influence is apparent, with soaring synths and a very nicely constructed bass line which adds detail and a harsher sound, contrasting with each other to create what I believe to be the highlight of the song. On the whole vocals are confident, but the repetition of a few melodies becomes monotonous after the first verse and chorus. The interlude is a refreshing burst of energy, where the vocalist uses a more varied melody and really belts his words out. The guitar and drums at this point, further display their post-punk influences, with a dirtier sound than the rest of the song, creating an element of excitement which I hope they choose to pursue further. On the whole, this is a catchy song, but nothing which I have not heard before.
