Johnny And The Giros – The Day That Friction Overcame Fun

With a drum roll and the lyrics “Steal my lightning and give it back to Zeus!”, Johnny And The Giros immediately grab your attention with their new single, ‘The Day That Friction Overcame Fun’ (which I’ll now refer to as TDTFOF as I can’t be arsed typing it all out again). And they keep it (your attention that is; pay attention!) throughout the song, attacking the listener with a cavalcade of noise that doesn’t let up at any point.

For the uninitiated, Johnny And The Giros are a quite superb band from Scotland who play electronic tinged indie music. And they do it rather well. TDTFOF is a great example of their fare, replete with all the elements that make Johnny And The Giros such a thrilling prospect. For a reference point, think about a band that manages to comprise components of Bloc Party, Delphic and Foals yet sounds utterly fresh. If they continue to release music this good, then hopefully they’ll soon be talked about at the same level as those bands.

Anyway, back to TDTFOF and it being a great example of Johnny And The Giros’ fare. A deep, almost funky bass punctuates the song for the duration, whilst a frenzy of drumming keeps what off kilter rhythm there is going. A synth beat also pervades, and throw in a little guitar and some myriad sound effects and you’ve got the ingredients for a great tune. The song builds to a cracking crescendo that erupts into an orgy of synth based fun, ending with the chorus lyrics of “What you didn’t know was that I was waiting from that day friction overcame fun”.

As was I. Well no, not really. But it’s a great song, and my often incoherent ramblings don’t do it justice. Give it a listen (or many) and you’ll see for yourself. You may also have found a new favourite band.

Kick To Kill – Black Kisses

Kick To Kill are a Glasgow based band who have been around for a few years now, gaining critical acclaim for their packed out live shows, but remaining unknown to most outside their hometown. Signed to one of the cities more interesting indie labels, Flowers In The Dustbin Records, the band’s story is interesting – frontman Dave Cook discharged himself following a near-fatal stabbing in Glasgow city centre the following day with the words “it doesn’t hurt” – Kick to Kill have spent the past 2 years refining their sound, which they describe as “aggressive, nihilistic rock n roll”.

Black Kisses is the band’s latest effort, which combines their signature darker, rockier sound with a lighter, poppier influence. It’s difficult to compare the band to anything else, but as a point of reference, think early Bloc Party meets Editors meets The Raveonettes. While lead guitarist and singer Cook’s vocals sound dark, brooding and fantastic, Black Kisses focuses more upon possibly the catchiest riff of the year, the steady drums, and the building and building of the song towards the close.

Sharing a name with, quite frankly, one of the most terrifying bands I’ve ever come across, if you’re interested in checking out the band further, which you should be, have a look at the bands facebook. Taking influences from everything from The Stooges and 80s synths, and adding elements of gothic and old-school emo, Kick To Kill are a band with a cult following that’s quite clearly on the rise. Expect big things from these guys. Their record label page closes with the words “Listen. Believe”. They have it spot on, it’s pretty hard to hear Black Kisses without falling in love with the band.

The Eclectic Electric Season 6 Returns in Style…

The Eclectic Electric, Aberdeen Student Radio’s long running epic electro-rock sci-fi space opera and banging multi-genre dance party kicked off the start of term in style with an exclusive broadcast from a Zeta-Reticulan spaceship somewhere in the upper reaches of the satrosphere. It was a decent night and we first encountered the vile candour of new special guest star, the Angry Young Man. His nemesis,  the Curmudgeon, will be on hand next week to piss on that fire. Fingerbanger and Turbofresh went on the decks for another epic mixoff, here’s all the bombs they dropped on the show….
