The Eclectic Electric – Fingerbanger’s Vintage Vinyl Shakedown

After being mentioned on BBC Radio 6 last week during Steve Lamacq’s show, and a triumphant DJ Set at the Torcher Parade,  the Eclectic Electric returned with something a bit special. Fingerbanger has finally paid off his debt to the Hutts (which is why he’s tapping money from everybody) and has had his record collection returned, and no longer has a bounty on his head. So this week we took it back to the old school.

Instead of using the technology we frequently remind you that we possess, we went back to our roots and did some rooting in the crates for the old classics. No Arnie this week, but his chat’s been getting stale anyways, we hear he’s got a new bird, the foul-mouthed swearing Buffy. Hopefully, we’ll have them both air next week.

Once again, Aberdeen Student Charities Campaign were proud to bring you another bombastic Torcher Parade, and as ever, ASR was on hand to enhance the fun with a live broadcast from their  float, as well as photographs of EVERY float, the torch bearers, and much much more!

With nearly 50 floats this year, Torcher Parade 2010 was another unmitigated success, with hundreds of locals lining the streets to see what wacky ideas the students could imagine this year.  They were far from disappointed.  There was a wide variety of  floats from enthusiastic  student clubs and societies, including ASR’s  very own Nightclub at the End of the Universe. Others though, took a more serious approach and  focused on  promotional campaigns like the Vote For Students appeal; a group working to encourage students to vote for their own interests, due to some parties’ wishes to raise tuition fees (the fiends!). It all kicked off  around 7.30, following the traditional route in a big loop from the Marischal College to Queens Cross and back down Union Street.  Roughly 80 students joined forces to bear the torches in an attempt to win the world record for the longest torchlit student parade. Against the backdrop of the setting sun,  this  created a fantastic scene.  It was also truly the time where the floats with lights really came into their own, with ASR’s disco lights arcing across Union Street’s shimmering Granite facades to great effect. After returning to John Street, the floats were abandoned in a flurry to the already exhausted stewards to dismantle, and a mass exodus of  students descended on the  RGUnion  for an after-party that went well into the early hours.  With parties on multiple floors,  plenty of crazy dancing, and highlights such as the AU Juggling Society showing off their skills with glowsticks,   including  a fantastic outfit with near 100 glowsticks on it.

Sadly, the parade came to an end all to soon for some, but certainly left alot of people feeling quite tired, but fear not, ASR Photographer Andrew MacKillop was on hand to capture as much of the event as possible, so check out the photos below. And don’t forget to vote for your favourite float!

Dan Le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip – The Logic of Chance Review

Rising Hip-Hop duo from Stanford, first formed in 2006. The instrumental side of things  is taken care of  by Daniel Stephens (Dan Le Sac)  and David Peter Meads (Scroobius Pip) provides the spoken word/lyric poetry.  Dan also handles the production, programming and backing vocals.    2010 marks the release of their second album:  The Logic of Chance.

Many tracks from this album feel like social commentary set to music, much like Thou Shalt Always Kill from their previous album, it seems Scroobius Pip is putting some personal observations – or even frustrations – about the world around him down on paper. I think the biggest asset of this album is its ability to make you want to take a step back from everything and see yourself and the world around you from a new angle.

The album is a mixture of songs in which the lyrics play a heavy role and others  where  it’s more about the beats. Sick Tonight is the perfect song to kick start the album as it’s somewhere in the middle of these extremes.  Scroobius delivers great lyrics and Dan adds a beat you can’t help but bop your head to.

The obvious choice if you’re looking for a track which is more about the music than the lyrics would seem to be The Beat, but along with some of the best instrumentation on the album, the lyrics are still insightful and quite catchy.

Another  standout track is Cauliflower,  with a really funky backing track by Dan and some fantastic vocals by American singer Kid A. The cutting social commentary is clearly evident in this track whilst it lampoons the fleeting relationships our generation can get themselves into.

Great Britain along with Stake a Claim, Snob and Get Better (the first single released from the album)  also show Scroobius Pips’  critical eye for society. That doesn’t mean he spends the tracks complaining, it’s more of a tolerant observation, often I found he was saying something I’d  already thought personally but he says it in a unique way that fuses perfectly with Dan Le Sacs musical input.

I definitely enjoyed Scroobius Pips’ contribution to the album more so than Dan Le Sacs’ but as an outsider to the Hip-Hop genre I would say it was bound to happen. There are some seriously catchy beats in the album that you can’t help but get sucked into, however for me they aren’t the main focus of the experience. I find myself listening out for the lyrics rather than just listening to the track and enjoying the music.

The Eclectic Electric Season 6 Returns in Style…

The Eclectic Electric, Aberdeen Student Radio’s long running epic electro-rock sci-fi space opera and banging multi-genre dance party kicked off the start of term in style with an exclusive broadcast from a Zeta-Reticulan spaceship somewhere in the upper reaches of the satrosphere. It was a decent night and we first encountered the vile candour of new special guest star, the Angry Young Man. His nemesis,  the Curmudgeon, will be on hand next week to piss on that fire. Late Night Bangin Beats…

Are you a DJ? Got some mad turntable or computer skills? Why don’t you send in a mix to us to be considered for late night airplay?

We’re happy to accept any genre, mixed using whatever technology you want to use. Mixes should be either an hour or two hours in length and at least 192kbps bitrate.  We would also need a full tracklist.

We recommend using a file uploading site to send them in (rapidshare, megaupload, yousendit, etc).

So if you want to hear yourself on air, drop an email to headdj@aberdeenstudent.org and we’ll see what we can do.
