Soviet 1926-27 Polar Census Archive

I recently joined an international team of scholars, led by David Anderson, who are investigating this enormous archive of unique historical records. My own pilot-study of materials from Western Siberia aimed to develop ethnoarchaeological insights into seasonal mobility, changing subsistence practices and sacred landscape geography of indigenous hunting and fishing communities, and also tracked how new innovations like transport reindeer were being incorporated into local life-ways. An overview of the project - and its preliminary results - has recently been published as a book edited by David Anderson.
