Funding sources for applicants

Funding is available for postgraduates from the College of Arts and Social Sciences. Two schemes are offered: the Research Project Award Scheme offers money in specific topic areas, many of which involve Anthropology (deadline 6th April 2012); and the general competition is available for topics not within the RPAS areas.

The Department of Anthropology is also part of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Scottish Doctoral Training Centre. Applicants with established UK residence are eligible for this prestigious funding, which includes fees, full maintenance grant and other research support. The current deadline is 30th March 2012.

International scholarships and bursaries are available for foreign students at the University of Aberdeen. The University of Aberdeen is recognised by the US Federal Government as one of the foreign institutions that US students can come to study at and use their financial aid in the UK. You will need to apply for your Financial Aid in the US. On your application you should list the University of Aberdeen as one of your choices of institutions you want to study at (you can list more than one). The code for the US Financial Aid application for the University of Aberdeen is G09368. Further information and guidance regarding how to apply can be found here.

Other information on University bursaries and scholarships is available from the on-line Postgraduate Prospectus and the College of Arts and Social Science Graduate School.

Some paid teaching within the Department may also be available to postgraduate students.

Angus Pelham Burn Awards: Current PhD students can apply for funds for fieldwork in the circumpolar North. The last deadline was November 2010. Click here for the criteria used in the awards.
