John S. Reid is a chartered physicist in the University
of Aberdeen. He is a retired Senior Lecturer and former Head of the Department of Physics.
John S. Reid has a long-standing interest in technical subjects, from his acquisition as a schoolboy of a full
amateur radio transmitting licence to later qualification as an offshore Yachtmaster. He has taught a wide variety
of University courses, generally in the realm of experimental physics, including practical courses, computation
and data handling, optics, digital electronics, mechanics and thermodynamics, meteorology and astronomy. His research
interests have centred on the use of X-ray scattering to elucidate the properties of solids, involving the design
of precision experimental equipment. An interest in the history of technology led him to produce an illustrated
account of the first 25 years of the Aberdeen Mechanical Society entitled "Mechanical Aberdeen: an Engineering
view of Aberdeen's Industies and Services 1888 - 1913". Copies are still available for £9 + pp. Enquiries
