Upstander or Bystander? Why Resistance in Hitler’s Germany Speaks to Our Times

When: November 21 2019, 6.00pm-8.00pm

Where: McNeil Center, University of Pennsylvania, 3355 Woodland Walk, Philadelphia, PA 19104

How can we inspire a new generation who will know when and how to stand up, rather than to stand by, when the world in which we live is under siege? During the dark days of the Third Reich, some Germans were faced with an agonising choice: would they turn into bystanders or upstanders in the face of tyranny?

Two such figures were Fritz Wiedemann, Hitler’s former adjutant who in vain tried to convince the American and British governments to stop Hitler when it was still possible, and Claus Count Stauffenberg, the officer who attempted to kill Hitler on July 20, 1944. Their lives provide powerful lessons for the 21st century.

Join us for a fascinating conversation featuring Thomas Weber, University of Aberdeen History Professor and author of Becoming HitlerFranz-Ludwig Count Stauffenberg, former politician and the son of Hitler’s failed assassin; Ulrich Schlie, Stauffenberg’s biographer and former Political Director of the German Ministry of Defence and Stauffenberg’s biographer; and Bettina Hoerlin, a former Health Commissioner of Philadelphia and the daughter of a fearless Jewish woman determined to seek justice for her husband’s murder during the Night of the Long Knives in 1934.

The discussion will be chaired by Roderick McDonald, Professor of History at Rider University, New Jersey, Aberdeen alumnus and board member of the University of Aberdeen Foundation.

Followed by an informal drinks reception.

We look forward to welcoming you! Please book below.
