The BSc Geology and Mineralogy class of 1979 reconvened in Aboyne on Saturday 13 July 2019 and held a 40 years reunion celebration.
We met at  The Boat Inn, Aboyne on the banks of the River Dee on a sunny evening. We recognised old friends who had donned long hair in the 70’s. After graduation at Marischal College, we had dispersed on our travels, students had selected a post-graduate MSc or to undertake a Doctorate; while others entered Mining Geology or Petroleum Geology.
Colleagues travelled from  as far as Australia, Canada, Netherlands, Norway and different parts of the UK to attend the reunion. After the dinner, a 36 question quiz was held on our geological field trips and the pop musicians of the late 70's. Euan and Kathryn Mearns won the main quiz and were presented with a 15 year old malt whiskey. Runner up Scottish prizes were awarded to all past students who had travelled back to NE Scotland from their international homes.
£630 was raised for the charity Prostate Cancer UK.  The charity's principal goal is to stop men from dying from prostate cancer. The money raised will help through shifting the science over the next 10 years to focus on research on radical improvements in diagnosis, treatment, prevention, we will  support  prostate cancer being a killer.
