The next meeting of the Senate will be held on Wednesday 2 May 2007 at 2.00 p.m. in the King’s Conference Centre.
Lunch will be available in the James McKay Hall from 1.30 p.m.
Staff and student members of the University are permitted to observe meetings of the Senate. Those wishing to do so will only be admitted on production of a valid current University Identity Card on the understanding that no intervention or lobbying can be permitted from non-members. Where items of confidential business are to be considered, non-members will be required to withdraw.

The following items will be deemed to be approved or will be noted, as appropriate, and will be incorporated into the formal record of the Senate Minute of the above meeting unless any member of the Senate e-mails the Academic Registrar by 5.00 p.m. on Monday 30 April to ask for an item to be formally discussed at the meeting, indicating their reasons for doing so.
5.1 Report from the University Committee on Teaching and Learning
The Senate is asked to approve, for its part, the recommendations of the University Committee on Teaching and Learning from its meeting of 23 March 2007. These recommendations address the following issues:
- An amendment to the policy on double marking of summative assessments at Honours and Postgraduate Taught levels;
- Establishment of a new Guidance Note on Placement Learning
5.2 Amendment to the Composition of the University Committee on Teaching and Learning
The Senate is asked to approve, on the recommendation of the Senate Business Committee, amendments to the composition of the University Committee on Teaching and Learning.
5.3 Report from the Academic Standards Committee (Postgraduate)
For its part, the Senate is asked to approve, on the recommendation of the Academic Standards Committee (Postgraduate), the recommendation that the Faculty of Science and Technology, Orkney College, an academic partner of UHI Millennium Institute be validated under the terms of the accreditation agreement currently in force between the University and UHI to deliver the research degree programmes in the area of Agriculture: Agronomy.
The validation would remain in force for five years under the terms of the accreditation agreement between the University and UHI. The validation proposal is subject to the academic area meeting recommendations specified in the relevant report by a stipulated date. The Senate is invited to note the actions taken by the University Court at its meeting on 20 March 2007.
6.2 Report from the University Committee on Teaching and Learning
The Senate is invited to note the actions taken by the University Committee on Teaching and Learning at its meeting on 23 March 2007. The items for information address:
- Minor revisions to the procedure for approval of examination papers following changes requested by external examiners.
- Employability funding from the Scottish Funding Council
- The Higher Education Academy Annual Report 2005-06
6.3 Report from the Academic Standards Committees
The Senate is invited to note the changes to the list of courses and programmes approved by the Academic Standards Committees at their recent meetings, available at http://www.abdn.ac.uk/senastracking/report/
6.4 Report from the Joint Planning, Finance & Estates Committee
The Senate is invited to note the actions taken by the Joint Planning, Finance & Estates Committee at its meeting on 6 March 2007.
6.4 Graduations In Absentia
The Senate is invited to note that details of those qualified to receive degrees, diplomas and other awards who have applied to have them conferred in absentia may be obtained from the Registry.
