5.1 Generic and transferable skills
5.1 Generic and transferable skills
The University will make such institutional arrangements as are required to ensure that the provision of teaching and support materials associated with generic and transferable skills is centrally coordinated and controlled.
5.1.1 C&IT Skills
The University is committed to the development of core C&IT skills in students through the use of C&IT within University learning and teaching, and through the delivery of specific courses that address C&IT skills and the incorporation of these into degree programmes. The minimum target skills profile of a graduating student will be modelled on the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) Foundation Syllabus4, or such nationally and internationally recognised standard as may succeed it.
5.1.2 Information Skills
The University will support students in acquiring appropriate information acquisition and management skills such as:
- Accessing and referencing information on the Web
- Use of e-journals
- Search techniques
- Plagiarism issues (see 8.1. Plagiarism)
5.1.3 Personal Development Planning
The University will support Personal Development Planning (PDP) for all students and it is anticipated that this will play a role in an individual student’s C&IT capability development.
5.2 Subject specific, or specialist skills
Academic Schools will be responsible for planning the teaching and support of subject specific or specialist skills. The University will provide assistance with the delivery of this teaching through Library and Historic Collections Information Consultants.
5.3 Central support for students
Helpdesk: Support for students, as well as staff (see 7.7), in their use of C&IT in learning will continue to be provided through a centrally resourced helpdesk facility. The resourcing should be sufficient to provide a response to most queries within one working day.
