Final Analysis available from Analysis2. Partner 1 analysed the data from all centres looking at relationships between case-mix variables, outcome variables, with differences between the centres being highlighted. Summary of statistical analyses of relationships between “long list” of variables collected in Phase 1 and the outcome variables chosen in Consensus 1 issued to each of the partners;
Consensus Conference 2 held in Ancona, Italy. A consensus was achieved, based on a combination of statistical information and on clinical input as to which variables from the Datacollect1 data set should be included in the ACMEplus instrument for Datacollect2.

Web Site established for use of Partners. This includes a message board for on-line discussion, and offers the facility of data store from which reports, minutes of meetings etc. can be downloaded.

Phase 1 data collection began. 200 patients were recruited to collect data, using the ‘long list’ of variables agreed by Consensus 1, on a representative sample of older people entering hospital care from primary care or entering a geriatric/rehabilitation facility after a short period in a general medical ward.
15 January 2001
Data Pilot began. 54 patients were recruited to collect data as a prelude to Phase 1.14 December 2000
Consensus Conference 1 held in Aberdeen. Results of the literature review and the variables recommended for inclusion in the ‘long list’ by the co-ordinating centre were considered, plus information obtained from the vignettes and opinions of all partners, to agree contents of ‘long list’ of variables to use in datacollect1. The questionnaire for Phase 1 was then composed.
6 December 2000
Literature Review completed and circulated to partners. This was a comprehensive literature review to supplement literature already reviewed as well as check on new reports to identify individual questions and ‘domains’ of variables which will need to be considered by Consensus 1.

Results of settings - routes of entry to hospital, description of demography, description of facilities health care/social care and local workers/care facilities - circulated to partners.

Reports of settings received from all partners.
10-11 June 2000
Initial Partners Meeting. One representative of each of the eight centres attended. This was mainly for administrative purposes and each representative reported back to their own centre.
