Professor John Iain Broom

Research Interests

Research Professor in Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine Robert Gordon University

Professor Iain Broom is based in the Institute for Health and Welfare Research, part of the? Faculty of Health and Social Care at Robert Gordon University and is also a Clinical Professor in Metabolic Medicine at the University of Aberdeen. He was until recently a Consultant in Clinical Biochemistry and Metabolic Medicine within NHS Grampian. Iain also holds a Professorial Research Fellowship with The Rowett Research Institute.

Iain was previously a Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer in Surgery in Aberdeen, responsible for metabolic care of surgical patients and the development of a research Surgical Metabolic Unit. He has held/holds research grants from the Medical Research Council, The Wellcome Trust, Department of Trade and Industry CSO, SHERT, and industry in areas relating to the metabolic response to injury/sepsis and in the fields of diabetes/lipid metabolism.

In 1996 Iain was appointed Director, Research and Development at GUHT, stimulating research activity within the Trust and facilitating links between GUHT, the Universities and other Institutes in promoting multi-disciplinary research.

Iain sits on several National and European research committees as a member responsible for peer review of research activity and in a special advisory capacity. He is also an international research advisor to the Institute of Health, University of Sydney (Australia). He is a member of a number of metabolic advisory boards within the pharmaceutical industry. He is the author of over 200 research papers and has contributed to numerous textbooks and speciality publications.

Iain is Director of the Centre for Obesity Research and Epidemiology (CORE) at Robert Gordon University and is also National Chairman of Counterweight, a multi-centre obesity management programme. While Counterweight is led by Robert Gordon University, it combines the expertise of world-renowned obesity researchers at the Universities of Glasgow, Bath, Leeds, Cambridge, Warwick and Imperial (London).

CORE hosts the Internet Site for the National Obesity Forum, the 'Obesity Portal'. As part of CORE's ongoing development a new post-graduate MSc course on Obesity Science, Prevention Policy and Management commenced in September 2009.
