Job satisfaction tops poll of life happiness
Job satisfaction is the most critical factor for life satisfaction and well-being, according to new research by a team of economists at the University of Aberdeen.

The Europe-wide research project also highlights the dramatic increase of stress-related illnesses in recent years in employees with high-speed jobs and tight deadlines.

The research, led by Professor Ioannis Theodossiou, Dr David McCausland, and Kostantinos Pouliakas, of the Centre for European Labour Market Research (CELMR) at the University of Aberdeen Business School, highlights a number of key findings which demonstrate the link between job satisfaction and quality of life. The countries studied were Denmark, France, Greece, the Netherlands, Spain, and the UK.

Professor Theodossiou, who co-ordinated the three-year research project funded by the European Union, said the link between working patterns on employees’ quality of life and well-being is a major concern. He said: “Employers increasingly demand that their employees have versatile skills, working time flexibility and a willingness to relocate.

“It is widely accepted that European workers are becoming more stressed by time constraints and deadlines and since work is an overwhelmingly important part of most of our lives, the satisfaction we derive from our jobs is a major factor in how happy we are as individuals.”

Professor Theodossiou and his team presented their findings to a European conference in Brussels recently where EU officials and high-level policymakers were invited from each of the governments of the participating EU Member States. The conference delegates also included representatives from employer and trade union organisations across the EU.

One of the most recurrent findings of the report is the fact that job satisfaction is the top factor in employees’ overall life satisfaction. This is over and above satisfaction with family, leisure time, health, finance, and social life.

“We found that satisfaction with the amount of leisure, with environment and with housing come last in the pecking order of happiness and well-being,” said Professor Theodossiou. “Career fulfilment provides workers with the means to maintain life satisfaction according to our results.”

Another key finding of the report shows that in most of the countries studied the high educated have a significantly lower level of job satisfaction and/or the low educated have a higher level of job satisfaction.

“We also found the relationship between the type of occupation and the level of job satisfaction is one of the most strongest and most cross-country results,” continued Professor Theodossiou. “It points to the importance of the type of job as the main factor of job satisfaction.

“Interestingly, employees who, due to sickness or disability, are unable to work full time report a marked improvement in their life satisfaction if they are able to be work part-time. Hence, society can only gain from this if the labour markets accommodate these individuals.”

The other main conclusions of the report refer to the more obvious aspects of job satisfaction including wages and job security.

“Wages are generally considered to have a positive impact on job satisfaction and across all the countries studied, a higher wage has a significantly positive effect on job satisfaction. Employees also strongly desire jobs that provide security in their employment, which is demonstrated by the fact that risk-free, permanent contracts are the most preferred contracts on average. However, employees show a lot of concern with the uncertainty and restraint that is associated with rotating shifts and with having their working times determined by their employer.”

A consistent finding is that employees express a strong desire for early retirement plans at the age of 55 or 60. Professor Theodossiou said: “This is a particularly worrying trend for the future as employers may have to give up the possibility of early retirement for their workers, which is likely to come at a cost in terms of offering them higher wages or some other work benefit such as lighter responsibility, or avoiding fixed job routines.”

The key findings of the research were the result of an identical questionnaire drawn up for the seven different countries that were studied.

Professor Theodossiou added: “Our research provided us with a unique opportunity to study the relationship between an individual’s working situation and quality of life and, as our research has highlighted, the link between career fulfilment and life satisfaction cannot be underestimated. This is an issue of policy concern and deserves attention.”

    Moving Forward Conference
    Calling All Post-Graduates

It has came to that time of year to form a College of Arts & Social Sciences Post-Graduate Conference Committee to help organise the “Moving Forward” Conference due to take place in summer 2007. Last year's conference was a huge success and details can be found at www.abdn.ac.uk/cass/pgradconf.

To do this we require to representatives from post-graduates of ALL disciplines within the school to form the committee and undertake the work involved in organising the event.

Participating in the committee affords a valuable opportunity to gain experience in event planning. Besides making your C.V. more attractive, it is also a useful avenue for networking and making friends.

If you are keen to take on this challenge, then please note your interest with me, John McKenzie at soc155@abdn.ac.uk, and I will be in touch in due course regarding the first meeting due to take place in early October.

    Two SIRE Professors appointed.
The University of Aberdeen Business School has recently appointed two Professors under the SIRE initiative, Hans Hvide and Ulf Gerdtham. The Scottish Institute for Research in Economics (SIRE) is the outcome of a substantial investment in Economics research in Scotland (approximately £21 million over 5 years) by the Scottish Funding Council and ten participating universities, including University of Aberdeen. It builds on the distinguished tradition of Economics in Scotland, with eminent contributions from, among others, Adam Smith and David Hume, and the more recent history of successful collaboration in the Scottish Graduate Programme in Economics, founded in 1989. SIRE pools key areas of strength within the Scottish Economics research base in three thematic programmes:

    • Behaviour Incentives and Contracts

    • Work and Well-being

    • Macroeconomics, Financial Linkages and the Regions

The administrative centre of SIRE is based at the University of Edinburgh, where the SIRE Director, John Moore, and Executive Director, Stuart Sayer, are located. In addition to its administrative and co-ordinating functions, the SIRE Centre will organise and host events and activities which exploit potentially exciting synergies that span across SIRE’s three thematic research programme. Further details may be found at www.sire.ac.uk and further details of the recent appointees at www.sire.ac.uk/people.html.

    Business idea winners

Two CENT related business ideas made it to the Final round of the Blue Skies Thinking Business Ideas Competition in April. Lecturers Russell Williams, David Eastwood and Robert Chia have won joint first prize in the Staff category with a very entrepreneurial idea based on a problem arising from their sporting interests. Stay tuned for further developments as patents are pending. It is exciting to see that Business School staff not only teach but are business-oriented and entrepreneurial in practice. The judges were of the opinion that the standard of entries and pitches were of very high quality and Russell, David and Robert were highly deserving of the prizes awarded.

Two of the four finalists in the inaugural Undergraduate section of Blue Skies were also from the Business School. The Graduation Project team from Venture Books, Mark Hansson, Sean Holmes, Ricky Smith and John Nicol also presented to the judging panel, a great experience for them.

News bulletin from the Head of School - 15 May.

With effect from 1 May 2008, Professor Angela Black assumed the role of Acting Head of School, taking over from Professor Michael Hughes, who has commenced work on a Framework 7 project on Eastern Europe and work in connection with a KTP grant.

In the last few weeks there has been considerable activity within the School. In a Finance Symposium, three professional speakers presented very stimulating and excellent talks to the Finance students. At the Annual Property Lecture 2008, an esteemed member of the profession delivered a thought provoking and very interesting talk. The Aberdeen Centre for Environmental Sustainability (ACES: www.aces.ac.uk) was launched. This Centre brings together experts from different disciplines in environmental, social and economic science and involves members of staff from our School. An Economics Second Year Honours Information Session created a definite party atmosphere among the interested students who came to find out about Honours in Economics. The Business School Postgraduate Open Evening provided great networking opportunity and plenty of posters and leaflets, brochures and information packs. As part of teaching within Accountancy & Finance, third and fourth years had a presentation on ‘professionalism’ by a senior manager (an alumnus) and staff from PricewaterhouseCoopers. On Friday, as part of a Financial Accounting workshop, second years received advice from the Training Manager for Scotland of KPMG on professional exam structures and study arrangement. Both firms are leading recruiters of graduates within the UK and hold various awards for being admired employers. A school meeting comprising all members of staff (academic and administrative) provided an update on School developments (including academic planning, teaching workload and retention).

News bulletin from the Head of School - 29 May

There is an international flavour to this update on activities in the Business School. We welcomed a number of esteemed international visitors from the University of Chicago, San Diego and South Australia.  We know that our visitors will be returning to their Institutions with excellent stories of the enjoyable time they had with us. There was also a very productive final meeting of the EU Framework 6 Project TERA (Territorial Aspects of Enterprise Development in Remote Rural Areas) with around twenty visitors from the Universities of Bologna, Patras, Helsinki, Latvia and the Czech Republic. Students from Wuhan University interested in studying with the Business School on 2+2 type programmes visited last week.  There is an agreement in place that covers Economics, Entrepreneurship and Management.

On staffing matters, the short listing for the Entrepreneurship Chair has taken place and interview dates are being organised. The short listing for accountancy and finance lectureships has taken place and interviews are being held at the end of June. The short listing for the management posts is scheduled to take place next week. Interviews for the SIRE Posts are taking place on Friday this week. Informal visits from interested parties for the Head of School appointment will take place at the beginning of June.

The new Centre for Entrepreneurship (CENT) Web Site is now live. Entrepreneurship staff have recently had success with their recent award from the Knowledge Transfer Grant fund.  Their proposal is designed to integrate work experience learning within postgraduate education. Two of our postgraduate MSc Finance and Investment students won the Uni Investor Postgraduate competition. A number of colleages are currently in India on a Recruitment and Collaborative Visit, obtaining feedback about our programmes, meeting alumni, assessing demand from employers and networking with overseas partners.

We have organised an “end of exams” celebration on Wednesday 18th June, at 4pm in F61 (after the School Research Council meeting).  Please come along for nibbles and networking.

News bulletin from the Head of School - 19 June

Thank you very much to everybody who came along to our post exams celebration yesterday, and especially to all our administrative staff for their perfect organisation of the event.  It was an excellent opportunity for us all to chat and catch up after the examination period and much enjoyed by everyone.

For those of you who were otherwise committed, here is a short update:

We paid tribute to the very hard work by academic and administrative staff in turning around all of the course results and programme awards so quickly and efficiently.  Many thanks to everybody concerned. There were over 3000 course marks inputted and 150 degrees awarded, including 77 at 2:1 and 7 at first class.

We expressed our thanks to Dr Julian Randall for his excellent contribution to the School through his role as Director of our Graduate Business School.  His hard work and dedication has been pivotal in the last three years in enabling us to move forward and enhance the student experience for postgraduate students in the Business School.  Russell is our new Director and I know that we would all like to wish him great success.

As many of you know, three of our Professors are taking advantage of the opportunity to focus on other activities through retirement from official academic duties.  There is evidence that academics publish more articles and books after retirement and I am sure that we will all enjoy the benefits of their continued collegiality through Emeritus status.  We are going to have a special celebration in early September to show our wholeheated appreciation to Pat, Jeff and Robert and wish them the very best of luck.

Our congratulations and good luck wishes also go to Breanna and her fiancee, Michael.  Their wedding takes place in less than ten days time.  On behalf of all colleagues in the Business School, we  presented Breanna with a wonderful array of gifts that will ensure the perfect start for their married life.  We all look forward to seeing photographs of the happy day.

There are a lot of teaching and research activities taking place in the School over the summer months.  I would like to wish everybody well with the various projects that are taking place and also to say that I hope everybody enjoys a well earned holiday break during the coming summer period.

Aberdeen economists lead €1M European health and safety study
Aberdeen economists will lead a major new Europe-wide study into the economic impact of health and safety practices in the workplace.

The European Commission has funded the €1.05 million project, which is partly aimed at addressing rising levels of stress amongst EU workers.Nineteen research institutions from across Europe, led by a team from the University of Aberdeen, are involved in the study. Professor Ioannis Theodossiou, Director of the University’s Centre for European Labour Market Research (CELMR) is co-ordinating the project, which ultimately aims to improve the health and safety conditions of the EU workforce. The other members of the Aberdeen research team are Professor Tim Barmby, Dr David McCausland, Dr Alexandros Zangelidis and Dr K. Pouliakas. Professor Theodossiou said: “In 2000, the European Union laid out its plans to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world, capable of sustained growth with more and better jobs and greater social cohesion. “The health and well-being of people of working age is of fundamental importance to this process and so a coherent and effective policy on health and safety in the workplace is therefore crucial.” He said that one of the key issues which health and safety policy-makers face is the increasing incidence of social illnesses such as stress, depression and anxiety at work. “These are issues, along with the rise of other occupational injuries and illnesses that need to be faced,” said Professor Theodossiou. “This new study will evaluate the cost and benefit of investing in health and safety at work and provide policy recommendations aimed at ensuring the continuing competitiveness of Europe’s changing labour markets.” He said that there was a need for policy makers to target practical problems arising within the workplace, and design new procedures to be implemented by firms, especially to SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises). “Gathering information on the status of health and safety at work in the European Union member states is vital in order for policymakers to implement EU directives and to anticipate new and emerging risks,” added Professor Theodossiou. The first meeting of the HEALTHatWORK group will take place on October 18 at the University of Aberdeen.

The 19 partners involved in the study are: University of Aberdeen, Université de Bourgogne, Baltic International Centre for Economic and Policy Studies, Aarhus University, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique, The Institute for Economic Analysis, University of Athens, University of Amsterdam, Welsh Economy and Labour Market Evaluation Research Centre, Ghent University, Centro de Desarrollo Tecnológico, Central Institute for Labour Protection– National Research Institute, University of Birmingham, Center for Public Affairs Studies Foundation, Hungary, Università Cattolica, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, The Research Institute of the Finnish Economy, Berlin Scholl of Economics and HYDRAULIS, Greece).

Business School Update - October 2009
It is a great pleasure to share a very warm welcome to our two new members of academic staff who joined us during September 2009.

David Scofield joins the property group and has recently completed research toward a PhD degree at the University of Sheffield. His academic interests include property investment and economics; market analysis; property law and institutions. David's research priorities include the application of institutional and transaction cost economics, and behavioural and social theories, to principles of property investment and market analysis. Recently completed comparative research involved the application of transaction cost economics to systems of institutional investment in the UK and the US isolating comparative cost differences in the enforcement of incomplete contracts. This work involved the application of social capital theory in explaining transaction (enforcement) costs disequilibrium in comparative investment markets."

Andrea Pataconni is an economist with a strong interest in management. He graduated from Bologna (BA) and Oxford (MPhil and DPhil). He spent the last three years on a British Academy Postdoctoral fellowship at Oxford University. He was selected in 2006 as one of the best finishing PhD students in Europe by the Econometric Society and is the recipient of several awards.   His research interests lie mainly in organizational economics and science and innovation. He has done work on hierarchies, promotion tournaments and manipulation of information in debate. Currently he is investigating why firms engage in open science by publishing in academic journals, and what determines the agglomeration of firms into more-or-less coherent social structures (with special focus on business groups).

The end of a productive and hopefully rewarding academic year, so what better way to celebrate than a "AUBS get together" event? We are also pleased to announce that Andrew Kardan (a bright young economist and a promising photographer) will exhibit some of his work from his recent adventures in the Middle East. The photos exhibited will be for sale, so anyone interested would have the opportunity to buy an original A. Kardan photo. In a few years time, it may prove to be an excellent investment choice for your portfolios so keep your eyes open... Old Senate Room.

The Business School will be hosting a briefing session for staff on Wednesday 12 January at 12.30 p.m. in F61, Edward Wright Building in conjunction with Research and Innovation (R&I) and Research Financial Services (RFS). R&I is the research development and commercialisation department of the University and is the first point of contact when you are seeking external funding for research projects. Are you considering offering your services as a consultant, planning conferences, devising specialised training programmes for practitioners in your field, or aiming to foster closer links with organisations? If the answer to any of the above is yes, this is an opportunity to meet the team who can help you with these activities. RFS provides support to researchers, assisting with applications, costings and subsequent administration of all externally funded research awards. There will be a series of short presentations from the team so you have an overview of what they do and how they can help you, followed by an informal discussion session so you can ask specific questions and get to know the team: Consultancy – Angela Park CPD Services (Continuing Professional Development) – Nikki Musgrave KTP – (Knowledge Transfer Partnership) – Robin Brown European Funding Sources – Kerry Kidd UK and Overseas (Excluding European) Funding Sources – June Middleton Research Financial Services – Fiona Elder Please inform Sheila Gordon, tel: 4127, email: sheila.gordon@abdn.ac.uk if you would like to attend. The event is open to new and existing members of staff and we hope you will take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about R&I and RFS.

The Performance Gap in UK Property Returns   Abstract: The paper analyzes the historical performance of UK direct property, taking into account the magnitude and timing of capital flows in and out of a number of property market segments.  Using historical return data over the time period 1981-2009 this paper shows that there is performance gap between the return that properties achieve and what investors get.  http://www.cass.city.ac.uk/faculty/s.lee/index.html
