Green Life
With over 2,000 people in halls of residence, our carbon footprint is in danger of moving up a shoe size!
Waste, Water, Energy, Cars on Campus, Biodiversity and how we treat it all has an impact!
That's why our Recycling facilities, together with sustainable travel and living plans are improving with your help.
So whether its glass, cans, clothes, books or paper we have a recycling unit for it! With recycling centers at both Hillhead and Crombie Johnston. All students produce waste! Around 400 tonnes per year now you ask... and look how much you'd save if you didn't waste so much food!
Ask yourself:
- Is it actually a waste?
- Can someone else use it?
- If it's broken, can it be repaired?
Water is one of the most precious resources the Earth has. Approximately 75% of the Earth's surface is covered in it, but our natural water resources are decreasing. There are many things that we as individuals can do to reduce our water usage, and with 13,000 students and 3,000 staff at the University, our water usage becomes huge.
Reducing your water usage benefits both the environment as well as reducing the ever-increasing costs associated with it.
Similarly, the amount of energy consumed by the University is equivalent to that of a small town. In your halls of residence, we have already fitted energy saving light bulbs as part of this initiative with improvements to the heating systems. As part of the refurbished halls at Hillhead, energy conservation measure are being incorporated and energy efficient equipment and controls installed. These measures help to improve energy efficiency, but on their own will not be enough. You have the potential to improve this in just a few small ways. A few key facts will make you think!
- Leaving lights on in overnight in a lecture hall £20
- Leaving 20 windows open during the heating season £388
- Turning 600 computer monitors off at lunchtime £800 p.a.
These factors all contribute to helping to reduce energy usage and provides direct and indirect benefits to us all.
