Academic Critical Care brings together a number of disciplines across the hospital into an attractive package that will appeal to applicants who wish to train in specialties associated with the care of acutely unwell patients. The combination of renal medicine and neurosurgery alongside an anaesthetic/ICU attachment provides a fantastic opportunity for the trainee to acquire the skills to recognise and manage acutely ill patients who need life saving treatment.
Critical care medicine and research is very active in Aberdeen with a dedicated ICU that receives patients from an extensive geographical area stretching from the Shetland and Orkney Isles to the Western Isles. The academic lead for Anaesthesia and Intensive Care is Professor Nigel Webster and his team who divide their time between the ICU and the Institute of Medical Sciences. Professor Michael Frenneaux who holds the Regius Chair of Medicine in Aberdeen is a Consulatant Cardiologist with a very active research programme in cardiac failure and is one of the academic mentors for this theme.
Opportunities for contact with research abound in the specialties in this rotation and the trainee will be guided towards acquiring clinical and research competencies by experts in the fields of renal medicine, neurosurgery and critical care. Scotland has a dedicated intensive care evidence based medicine group and the Scottish intensive care society; the trainee will hopefully have the opportunity to present at their meetings. In addition, the opportunity to spend four months working in the world-class outdoor adventure destination Fort William will feed the appetite of the hardiest, adrenalin junkies. Fort William is the outdoor capital of the UK; home to the highest mountain in the UK, some of the best mountain biking in the World and the gateway to the Western Isles, an area of outstanding natural beauty (www.visithighlands.com, www.outdoorcapital.co.uk, www.nevisrange.co.uk)
