Professor Margaret Ross is Head of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, which brings together a wide spectrum of academic activities within the six schools of Business, Divinity History and Philosophy, Education, Language and Literature, Law and Social Sciences, as well as in the Research Institute for Irish Scottish Studies and the Elphinstone Institute.

Professor Ross is an Aberdeen graduate, qualifying as a solicitor in 1981, and becoming a full-time academic member of staff in 1992. Margaret was previously Head of the  School of Law  prior to becoming Head of College in September 2011.

Margaret Ross’s research and teaching interests are in evidence, procedures and mediation applied in particular to civil justice, family and mental health contexts. She has published widely in academic and professional media and has strong links with lawyers and other professionals, policy-makers and academics working locally, nationally and internationally.

She is an independent reporter for the Scottish courts in adoption applications, a board member of Avenue (a relationships charity), and Vice-Chair of the University’s Fitness to Practice Committee for Medicine. She has been Vice-Chair of the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland, Chair of Grampian Research Ethics Committee and President of the Aberdeen High School for Girls/Harlaw Academy Former Pupils Club.
