Lord Wilson of Tillyorn retired from his role as Chancellor of the University at the end of December 2012. Nominally head of the University, the Chancellor confers degrees on graduands. The Chancellor is President of the General Council, the University’s graduate body, and has other, largely ceremonial duties.
A retired diplomat and former Governor of Hong Kong, Lord Wilson was installed as Chancellor in 1997, having previously served as Chancellor’s Assessor on Court (1993-97) and Senior Lay Member of Court from 1995 to 1997. Before that he was the penultimate Commander-in-Chief and 27th Governor of Hong Kong.
To commemorate Lord Wilson’s time as Chancellor of the University, a new scholarship fund will be established in his honour to support students from Hong Kong to study at Aberdeen. The Wilson Scholarships will be open to Hong Kong residents wishing to study at the University of Aberdeen who demonstrate outstanding academic ability and exceptional talent.
Lord Wilson’s successor as Chancellor is expected to be appointed early in 2013.
