Professor Claire Wallace was appointed a Vice- Principal for Research and Knowledge Exchange in July 2011, with particular responsibility for funding and knowledge exchange activities.

After graduating with a Bachelors and then a Doctoral degree from the University of Kent, Professor Wallace taught at Plymouth and then at Lancaster Universities. During the early 1990s Professor Wallace helped to set up the Sociology Department at the Central European University, Prague, before moving to the Institute for Advanced Studies in Vienna, where she became Head of Sociology.

Claire Wallace is Professor of Sociology and until recently was Research Director of the College of Arts and Social Sciences. She has done research on comparative European issues including the integration of work and care, the quality of life in different European countries and migration. She was formerly editor of the international journal European Societies, official journal of the European Sociological Association, and was elected President of the European Sociological Association, serving from September 2007 to October 2009.
