Professor Gane is Head of the College of Arts and Social Sciences, which brings together a wide spectrum of academic activities within the six schools of Business, Divinity History and Philosophy, Education, Language and Literature, Law and Social Sciences. He has been a Vice-Principal since 2004, having initially been appointed as Vice-Principal for Library and Information Services and latterly as Vice-Principal (Culture and Communities). In the latter role he is responsible for developing and implementing the institution's cultural and public engagement strategy. He is the academic lead for the new library project, and also has responsibility for equality and diversity.

Professor Gane has held the Chair of Scots Law since 1994 and has been an adviser to the Scottish Executive on human rights issues, to the Scottish Parliament on criminal justice matters and was a member of the Sentencing Commission for Scotland throughout its period of operation.

Chris Gane was born in Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders and educated at the University of Edinburgh and the Université d'Aix-Marseille (Aix-en-Provence).
