Councilor McKail represents constituents in Westhill and District. These include Kirkton of Skene, Garlogie, Dunecht, Echt and Lyne of Skene, Cluny, Midmar and Monymusk. Along with Ann he has lived in the north east since 1985 and in Westhill since 1997. His interest in community involvement is possibly due to his pre retirement employment in education and in social work. He has been head of two residential schools and has been a social service manager for children’s services. Professional qualifications include a Masters degrees in Education (Aberdeen) and Masters degree in Social Sciences/Social Work certificate (Birmingham).

Prior to being elected as a councillor in 2007 he was chairman of the Westhill Residents Association; Chairman of the Garioch and North Marr Community Safety Group; founder member and Chairman of the Westhill and Kingswells First Responder Scheme, Vice chair of Grampian Neighbourhood Watch Association and a member of the Children’s Panel Advisory Committee for Aberdeen City. As an Aberdeenshire Councillor he sits on the Housing and Social Work committee, Grampian Joint Police Board, Garioch Area Committee and is a member of the Aberdeenshire Council Administration in parnership with the Lib.Dems. His main interests outwith politics is as a member for some 29 years of Rotary International. He is a Past President of Aberdeen St Nicholas and in 2002 -2003 was elected as District Governor for District 1010(Scotland North).
